Frequently Asked Questions

Who are we?

We are Family Law Software, the leading provider (by far) of software for divorce attorneys, mediators, judges, and divorce financial planners nationwide. Click here to visit our site for divorce professionals.

We have been in business for over 20 years. We are the only software endorsed by either the Association of Divorce Financial Planners or the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts, and we are endorsed by both.

Over that time, our child support guideline calculators have been used to calculate the actual child support amount used by hundreds of thousands of couples.

What is a child support guideline calculation?

The child support obligation is based on a calculation that varies from state to state.

In some states, the calculation is quite complicated. The factors always include the income of the payer, the number of children, and a state-specific table. In most states, they also include income of the recipient and expenditures by both parties on health insurance and child care.

But beyond that, every state is different both in terms of what factors count and what formulas are applied.

Other factors can be number of overnights, federal taxes, travel costs, education expenditures, mortgage payments, summer camps, and on and on.

Family Law Software knows all the factors in your state and will correctly apply them to get the correct result.

How accurate are child support calculators?

Most child support guideline calculators that you see online include a disclaimer stating that the results are only estimates.

That is not the case with ours.

We promise that if you enter the numbers correctly, you will get precisely the correct result -- even in states where the computations are very complicated, or federal taxes are a part of the calculation, and even in special cases such as cases involving a very-low-income payer, or cases where there is a child from another relationship living in the home.

Our online calculators are the same ones used by thousands of attorneys, mediators, and financial planners in our 22 states (*), and some or all judges and magistrates in 6 states (**).

And, as we said above, hundreds of thousands of couples have used the Family Law Software child support guideline calculators to calculate their child support amounts.

Why are we making it available for free?

The child support calculator is in the free version of the Divorce Financial Planner from Family Law Software.

We are making the free version available partly as a public service; partly as a promotion for our professionals (we invite you to hire a professional who uses a professional edition of Family Law Software); and partly as a promotion for the paid version of the Divorce Financial Planner.

Why do I create an account?

Most online child support guideline calculators are temporary. You enter your numbers, get your result, close the page, and it vanishes. If you want to change an entry, you have to start all over. If you lose access to the result, you have to start all over. Not with the Family Law Software child support guideline calculator. With ours, you will create an account, which you can log into again and again. Your numbers are saved. And you can easily change numbers and instantly see the impact on the child support guideline result.

Is my account secure?

Our free child support calculator data and access are protected by the same security measures that guard our professional and judicial sites. We use https and TSL security and a host of other measures to keep your data safe.

Can I use a fake name?

Sure you can. But we do not recommend it. You may decide to sign up for the Personal Edition divorce calculator, or send your file to an attorney, at which point you will want the name and email to be real. This is easiest if you simply enter your actual name and email address. And your account is secure. No one will see it except you (and people you authorize to log in).

What do we do with your information?

We will not do anything with your information. Click here for our privacy policy.

(*) Calculations are available for: California, Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

(**) At least some judges and magistrates use Family Law Software for official child support calculations in Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Some judges use other calculators. If you live in one of those states, we do not promise that your judge will be using our calculator, only that some judges in your state are using it. But in terms of both number of attorneys and number of judges using our calculators nationwide, no other software comes close.
